Australian Wine Tasting Notes

2003 Taltarni
Pyrennes Victoria Australia Shiraz $20
Score: 89.0
This is a terrific Shiraz. From the nose through the finish this wine shows subtle soil and cedar notes infused with black fruits -- blackberry, cherry, plum. The tannin is firm, slightly bitter, but fairly unobtrusive if served with food. However, it is structured for long ageing and it should develop beautifully. Its stated alcohol level is 14.5%, but I don't believe it (wineries are allowed a 'fudge factor'); I suspect it's closer to 13.5%, as it comes off as balanced and lively. Rated for current drinking, it should only improve over the next 7 to 10 years. Good value.
1999 Yering Station
"Yarra Valley, Victoria" Australia Chardonnay $20.00
Score: 91.0
"Light, lively and dry, this fascinating Chardonnay from Victorias oldest winery is a swirl of aromas and flavors - melon, pineapple, mint and grapefruit, with mineral tones on the finish. Excellent balance and finesse. "
1998 Wyndham Estate Bin 555
South Eastern Australia Shiraz $10.00

"Crab apple, plum and oak spice, and a hint of herb (oregano, perhaps), light tannin and decent length. Good value."
1999 McPherson

Score: 85.0
"Lean and minerally, dry and herbal, with melon rind fruit character and a long dried marjorum finish. Good value at just $7.00"
1999 McPherson
South Eastern Australia Chardonnay
Score: 87.0
"With its delightful fig, grapefruit and tart melon fruit, I thought this was Semillon. But its a Chardonnay with crisp acidity and a hint of oak on the finish. Very good value at just $7.00"
1999 Heritage Road Reserve

1997 Penfolds RWT
Barossa Valley Australia Shiraz $65.00
Score: 92.0
"A great Shiraz from the get-go. The nose is expansive and deep, with layers of subtle complexity: plums, leather, perfectly integrated oak, and best of all, its all in balance. A great wine now, it will only improve over the next decade. "
1999 McPherson

1999 McPherson
South Eastern Australia Shiraz Cabernet $8.00

"The Shiraz holds the dominant position here, sweet, deep cherry pie fruit on the nose; dry cherry pie fruit on the palate, firm structure, well integrated tanin, silky texture and a moderately fruity finish. Good value."
1999 Heritage Road
South Australia Merlot $13.00

"Yummy-soft, rich cherry-berry, light vanilla, light tannin, and a super fruit finish. Simple, but, but so fruity it puts a smile on your face."
