1998 Stellenryck
South Africa Chardonnay
Score: 78.0
"comes off as a bit corked, and has some spritz. Decent apple fruit underneath. Good varietal definition."
1997 LOrmarins
South Africa Chardonnay
Score: 75.0
"Very dry, austere apple. Absolutely dies on the palate."
1996 Bergkelder [very small] Fleur du Cap
South Africa Merlot
Score: 88.0
"Deep dried cherries, leather and cedar notes, light tannin, and a long subtly complex finish."
1994 Meerlust Rubicon
Stellenbosch [South Africa] $25.00
Score: 90.0
"An absolutely delicious wine, full of tart cherry fruit, green olives and mint. The tannin is moderate, the structure firm and the tangy finish lingers for minutes. Pair with traditional red wine fare such as beef, sweetbreads, tomato sauces and cheese. "
1994 The Bergkelder estate
La Motte [South Africa] "A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc,"
Score: 92.0
" this is a marvelous wine, complex, supple, packed with black currant and blackberry flavors, as well as nuances of toast and spice from the French oak. Perfect balance, smooth texture and firm structure. Great now, Id love to put aside a case and see how it will age over the next decade. A first rate bargain at $15."
